Born in Jamaica, Lloyd Barnes moved to the Bronx, New York, and established the Wackies House of Music, an influential reggae studio and record label. His work is considered foundational to the New York reggae scene. The Wackies label became famous for its raw, atmospheric, and dub-infused sound, earning a cult following in Europe and Japan and influencing future electronic music acts like Massive Attack and Rhythm & Sound.
